Great Big Story take us on a trip to Amami Ōshima, a small island in Japan, where the locals eat cycad, a plant that can be extremely poisonous.

But why? Well, after the Second World War, the US occupied Japan and the locals on this island had no way to get to the mainland. So, they had to turn to the most common plant on their island, the cycad. After working out how to remove the poison (after MUCH trial and error) eventually they were able to make it safe to eat. Most of the time anyway…

Decades later, the plant is still being eaten, despite the fact that the locals can eat almost any food they like! It’s become a sought-after skill to work out just how to remove the dangerous chemicals in the plant and turn it into a tasty dish! It’s a fascinating story that shows just how determined humans can be to eat some delicious food!
