CNN Motion tells us the history of fashion shows in this brilliant animation.
We take fashion shows for granted now. London Fashion Week and other big catwalk events feel totally normal. But how did they first get started and who’s idea was it? In the 1860s in Paris, radical designer Charles Frederick Worth decided to host the world’s first fashion show. It was a small, private affair, with a few big names allowed in. Surprisingly, no photography or reporting was allowed, a far cry from the state of play today where thousands of big name journos flock to events like this.
The trend started to spread around the world, but the public still weren’t allowed access until after the Second World War. The events became wildly popular and attracted guests from all over the globe. Now, fashion shows draw in massive audiences and get international coverage. Who knew such a simple idea would still be going so strong all these years later? Even the inventor of the fashion show probably never imagined that it would get as big as it is today.
