Proxy is a film by Nina Hoffmann, Haidi Marburger and Ramon Arango. It’s about a mother who creates a robotic version of her deceased son.
Set far in the future, the mother inputs information into a computer about her son. Pictures, voice recordings, all the things that made him “him”. A few days later a box arrives, containing an exact replica of her child that talks like him and is indistinguishable from the real thing. At first things go well, as the mother is able to reconnect for the first time with her son since he passed away.
But as the film goes on, the boy realises that he’s not a real human being. He becomes conflicted and feels like he’s living a false life. We won’t spoil the ending for you here, but the film is a stark warning about what can happen when people mix AI machines with real humans. It’s an incredible film and the animation in it is truly astounding. The short feels like something out of a Black Mirror episode. It’s a really ambitious project from this team. The plot of the short will have you on the edge of your seat right until the end.
