Broken Orchestra is an amazing short film directed by Charlie Tyrell that looks at the massive underfunding crisis of music in US schools.

In the last ten years, funding for musical instruments and lessons in American schools has plummeted. In 2007, the yearly figure spent on music in schools in Philadelphia was in the millions. Now, it’s in the tens of thousands. Teachers were devastated and struggled to put on even the most basic of musical performances. Some even reported seeing instruments literally falling apart in students hands.

But one school in Philadelphia decided to put on an art project to raise awareness about the issue. It was called “Broken Orchestra”, where talented professional musicians would try and create a musical piece using the broken instruments that were being used by the school. The project gained national attention and helped turn the tide in the push to get money back into the music rooms of America.
