Billboard goes inside the world of K-Pop merchandise. The music market is one of the biggest in the world and is worth billions.

One of the biggest revenue streams is merchandise. Each band and group are meticulously put together and are marketed extensively. Western pop musicians have been released merchandise for decades, but the Koreans have finessed the formula. The fans of these groups are so dedicated, some have even opened K-Pop themed guesthouses that are packed full of goodies from their favourite artists.

Billboard: Inside The Multi-Billion Dollar K-Pop Merchandise Industry image of Billboard

Billboard meet Stacey Kim, who owns one of these guesthouses. She explains how she wasn’t even that into K-Pop until a few years ago. But after getting hooked on the reality TV show Produce 101 which looks to pluck talented singers from obscurity she became a huge fan. Now, she’s spent hundreds of dollars on merch and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. It’s people like Stacey that fuel the merchandising madness in the music industry. In a world where it’s easier than ever to buy things at the tap of a button, will this model be the future of music? Only time will tell.
