Sent Away by Rosa Fisher documents her father’s negative experiences at boarding school.
Some children have fond memories of boarding school, but for others it can be a very traumatic experience. Being separated from your parents is hard enough and many schools have a reputation for stern teaching and tough punishments. Before it was outlawed in the late 80s, caning was a common practice and left many children in severe pain and often caused permanent scarring.
This emotional short film takes us inside of a boarding school experience of the director’s father. The events of the film take place in the late 1960s. Teachers were far crueller back then and physical punishment wasn’t just legal, it was actively encouraged. The British schooling system was particularly punitive and looked to instill the damaging “stiff upper lip” attitude of the era into kids. The animation shows us what it was really like to attend a school like this and how it had a disturbing effect on the children who were subjected to it.
