Paulette Wilson had lived in the UK legally since she was a child, but during the Windrush scandal, she was almost wrongly deported back to Jamaica.
In 2018, hundreds of legal citizens who had moved from The Caribbean to the UK decades ago were wrongly, detained, deported and denied NHS care because they had been wrongly classified as living in Britain illegally. Paulette was almost one of those people. What’s even more shocking is that she hadn’t even been back to Jamaica in over 50 years and would have struggled massively if she was sent there from the UK. In this documentary from The Guardian, we follow Paulette as she takes a trip back to Jamaica to discover more about herself and her identity.
She goes back to her old neighbourhood and meets her sisters and other family that she hasn’t seen since she was very young. It’s a touching doc to watch that shows us the real life impact that the policies around the Windrush generation had. It shows us the complicated identity that people from this generation have and how they were betrayed by the country that they’d called their home for so long.
